Ceiling fans in Southwest Florida work harder than most — they're often running nearly year-round, in a climate that's tougher on motors and hardware than the conditions most fans are designed and rated for. A maintenance interval that works fine in a dry climate usually isn't enough here.
For most homes, a check every six months to a year keeps small issues from becoming bigger ones. Homes closer to the coast, or fans on covered lanais and porches exposed to outdoor air, are on the shorter end of that range — the salt content in the air accelerates corrosion on motor housings and mounting hardware in a way inland homes don't experience nearly as much.
Beyond dusting the blades, a proper check includes making sure the mounting bracket and downrod connections are still tight (humidity cycles cause materials to expand and contract, which can gradually loosen hardware), listening for motor noise that's changed over time, and checking that the fan isn't wobbling more than it used to — a new wobble is often the first sign of a balance or mounting issue, not just something to ignore.
Outdoor-rated fans need extra attention to the motor housing seals, since that's what's actually keeping humidity out of the motor in the first place.
A grinding or clicking sound, visible rust on the mounting hardware, a wobble that's gotten noticeably worse, or a fan that's slower than it used to be at the same setting are all worth having checked before they turn into a full fan replacement. Caught early, most of these are straightforward repairs rather than a full swap.
